How to Blend Buttercream Colours
We share the secret in how to achieve the perfect blend of buttercream colours — no more painting the piping bags with gel pastes, no more mess, no more streaks in the buttercream.
Gone are those days. It's a much more straightforward process, but be prepared to have lots of bowls handy.
Before you do anything, be sure to prepare your buttercream. It should be fluffy. Read our post on how to colour buttercream.
- Divide the buttercream into bowls. Depending on how many colours you want to make, divide equally.
- Using a toothpick, add little colour to the buttercream. Remember if you add more, you won't be able to adjust it. Start small. Do not overmix, mix in 5-second intervals then take a break. If you want to achieve a bright hue, add more colouring.
- Once all the colours are mixed, take a large piece of cling film and lay it flat on your work surface.
- With a spoon, lay each colour in a straight line. Do not overlap the colours, but do place them next to each other.
- Once all the colours are placed, roll the cling film into a sausage. Make sure it is tight, tie each end tightly into a knot if possible. You will be left with a long sausage.
- Place the piping nozzle into a piping bag. Cut one end off the sausage wrap and place into the piping bag. Twist the top of the piping bag to ensure it is stable, and no buttercream should fall out.
- Pipe a tester in a bowl. Once you are happy with the way it's coming out, go ahead and decorate your cakes or cupcakes.
It's as simple as that. Do share your bakes with us on our social channels, we will do a repost. Use our hashtag #cakecabinet and do tag us in your pictures. We would love to see all your creations :)
