How to Cover a Round Cake with Sugarpaste
How do you cover a cake in sugarpaste that is perfectly smooth, without any air bubbles or those itty bitty wrinkles? Sugarpaste is quite a flexible medium which you can use to your advantage. Follow our step by step guide for the right way to knead, roll and lifting the sugarpaste onto the cake. You will find that covering isn't so strenuous!
Prepare the cake by coating a light layer of buttercream.
1. Unwrap from the packaging, and place on a non-stick board. Knead the sugarpaste till you reach a workable consistency. If you find the sugarpaste is a little sticky, add some icing sugar into it, but not too much. Lightly dust your non-stick board or mat with icing sugar.
2. Roll the sugarpaste to the size of your cake. Lift as you roll, this will prevent it from sticking. If you feel it's getting more sticky, add some more icing sugar.
3. Gently lift the sugarpaste over the rolling pin. Position the cake near you so its easy for you to cover.
4. Smooth the sugarpaste using a smoother. Smoothers are essential because the pressure from your hands may leave impressions. Begin in the middle, on top of the cake, move the smoother outwards and down the sides. Smooth and shape the sugarpaste to the cake.
5. If air bubbles appear, insert a pin at an angle, release the air and smooth it over. Use the straight edge of the smoother to mark the sugarpaste at the base of the cake.
6. Trim off the excess using a pizza cutter or a knife.
